Who Are We?

The Cleveland Polish Constitution Celebration Committee is a diverse group of Greater Clevelanders who have organized to:

  • Salute Poland's history and culture

  • Preserve the local heritage and traditions of Polonia in Cleveland

  • Develop and revitalize some of our oldest Polish neighborhoods

About Polish Constitution Day

The world's second oldest written constitution was established by Poland's Great Sejm (or parliament) on May 3rd, 1791. It reflected many of the same principles of a democratically divided government, freedom of expression, and religious tolerance that were embodied in the United States constitution, which was ratified just four years earlier.

  • May 3rd became a Polish national holiday in 1819

  • It was first celebrated in Cleveland's Warszawa Historic District in 1894

  • The holiday became a focal point of anti-government protest before Poland's independence in 1990

  • Today it is celebrated in many cities of the U.S. and the world.

Something that few people know is that Cleveland has the third largest Polish community in the United States, right behind Chicago and New York.
